"Fresh Paint" is the first episode in the first season of the ABC police drama Rookie Blue. It is the series premiere, and aired on June twenty-fourth in 2010.

Synopsis[]

Triumph turns to humiliation when a high-stakes take-down of a suspect goes awry. Andy McNally has made a critical rookie mistake, ruining a long-running undercover drug sting, and tries to make up for it by going face to face with a volatile gunman who already has one man's blood on his hands.

Plot[]

The five rookies are given a mischievous welcome to the force by their superiors via a round of drinking games. In the morning, they arrive for their first official days of work, though newbie Traci Nash is revealed to have started a secret affair with Detective Jerry Barber. Andy McNally, assigned to training officer Oliver Shaw, is soon called to the scene of a shooting at a drug den. There, well-known dealer Mink Barker has been killed by a fleeing gunman, according to sex worker and now witness Sadie Falls. Andy rushes to save a young woman who is overdosing, while back at the station house officer Dov Epstein and Gail Peck, stuck on desk duty, are flummoxed by the arrival of a transgender suspect who needs to be searched.

Back at the crime scene, Chris Diaz attempts to take statements; Andy and Traci, who has arrived with her trainer Noelle Williams, find a young boy, Joe, hiding in a closet. Andy then chases down and proudly arrests two other witnesses — but then learns that one of them, Sam Swarek, is actually an undercover officer whose eight-month sting operation is now ruined. Chris' training officer, Frank Best, swiftly bargains with Sadie for information on the shooting; a highly annoyed Sam orders Andy to search for evidence of the still-missing gunman. Joe's father arrives to retrieve him, and Traci quickly figures out that he has been buying drugs from the house. Andy, after meeting charming Detective Callaghan, heads off on her own and finds herself caught by the distraught teenage shooter, Martin Bentz.

Andy reasons with Martin and convinces him to disarm himself; he eventually explains that he shot Mink in anger over his sister, the overdosing girl. Andy brings him in unharmed and soon learns that the sister is recovering at the hospital. Oliver reveals that he knew Andy's dad, Tommy, a former cop who has been "going through a hard time." Sam, still angry about missing out on an important arrest of a dangerous drug dealer, rejects Andy's offer of a conciliatory drink. Traci turns down Jerry's invitation and returns home to her young son, Leo. Andy goes home to her father; he assures her that, despite a tumultuous first day, she will make a great cop.
